In early 2005, the Mallozzi family approached BCI with a concept plan for the aggressive revitalization of an existing industrial building constructed in the early 1900’s in the center of downtown Schenectady, New York. The project goal was to recreate the existing structure and to replicate an authentic Italian bakery. The Mallozzi family, having traveled extensively throughout Europe and in the US, had the desire to construct a state-of-the-art production bakery while also establishing the retail ambiance for patrons that felt just like Italy. The Mallozzi family, Synthesis Architects and BCI set out to bring this to reality.
In order to create the desired ambiance and continue to produce the finest Italian pastries, the team reached out to secure the majority of the bakery equipment from European suppliers and vendors. In addition to language barriers, the coordination of metric and US standards coupled with wide ranging diversities in means and methods of construction demanded the team maintain extensive communication to accommodate the necessary equipment, casework and fixtures as desired. From concept to design and throughout construction, utilizing all forms of communication, equipment that had never before been shipped or assembled in the United States, became a reality.
